Five years ago, House Designer was just an idea; Today, we celebrate House Designer’s 5th Anniversary, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the journey that brought us here. What started as a simple favour for a friend has grown into a thriving design service, transforming 1000+ homes across the UK.
The Story of House Designer
In 2019, a close friend was renovating her home in North London. She had countless ideas and Pinterest boards but no clear direction, leaving her and her family overwhelmed. I suggested, “Why not work with a designer for a flat fee?” She loved the idea, and I stepped in to help. Together, we brought her vision to life, creating a home that was both beautiful and functional.
That experience was a turning point—I realised there was a real need for accessible, stress-free design services. And so, House Designer was born, built on the belief that great design should be easy, enjoyable, and within reach for everyone. Five years on, that vision continues to shape everything we do.
In January 2020, I officially launched House Designer, offering affordable interior and garden design services with a focus on making great design straightforward, professional, and within reach.
The First Clients
Not long after launching, my first client, Katherine, found us through a Google search. Her project was outside Northampton and she opted for the deluxe package for her Living Room. Helping her create a space she loved was an amazing start to House Designer’s journey.
From there, word began to spread. One project led to another, and before long, I realised I couldn’t do it all alone. Within the first few months, I brought on two freelance designers to help manage the workload. Six months later, I hired my first full-time designer, Alysia. A big moment that made it clear House Designer was growing into something real and sustainable.
Growing Through Challenges
Starting a business is never easy, but launching House Designer in 2020 came with unique challenges. From the outset, our goal was to make interior design accessible through a fully online service, long before remote consultations became the norm. While the pandemic accelerated the shift towards virtual solutions, we had already built our business around this innovative approach. We focused on refining our online consultations and ensuring a seamless experience, helping clients transform their spaces with ease, no matter the circumstances
Those early challenges reinforced the importance of resilience and truly listening to our clients. Every project became an opportunity to refine our approach, shaping the way we work today. Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far HD has come since those early days and we’re just getting started.
Growing as a Team of Designers
As I reflect on the past five years, I feel incredibly grateful. House Designer has grown from a one-woman operation to a team of talented designers, and creatives. We’ve worked on homes, gardens, and offices across the UK, always keeping our focus on creating spaces that are both stylish and practical.
