How Exterior 3D Visuals Can Help You Avoid Expensive Design Mistakes: A Case Study

Planning the outside of your home is just as important as the interior, but many people find it difficult to imagine the final look based on architectural plans alone. That’s where our 3D exterior design process comes in. In this case study, we show how homeowners can use our expert visualisations to avoid expensive mistakes and gain full confidence before renovation  began.

That’s exactly why this client came to us. With architect’s plans and drawings but no way to see how it would all come together, she needed help bringing her ideas to life. Our exterior design service turned a flat plan into a fully realised 3D concept making decision-making easier, faster, and far less risky.

The Design Challenge

Modern exterior design mood board with brick, roof tiles, doors, windows, and lighting finishes.

The house, located in a traditional Hertfordshire village, needed to feel in keeping with the local style but with a modern twist. As the client explained:

“Our house is in a village where most homes tend to be older style properties. I like the traditional style but mixed modern.”

OUR EXTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE

Working from the architect’s drawings, we created multiple 3D options to reflect her brief. These explored different material combinations and cladding arrangements to help the client make confident choices about the home’s final look.

Exploring Real Product Options and Variations

Our expert team tested several design options based on real materials the client had shortlisted. One of the key considerations was using Kassandra Multi bricks by Wienerberger. These offer a warm, textured finish that felt right at home in the village setting. To add a contemporary contrast, we explored the use of Vanilla White Cedral cladding; a subtle, fresh tone already used on their garage that the client felt could either be matched or slightly contrasted on the house.

The roof was designed with clay tiles, which reinforced the traditional character of the property. For windows, we visualised options using dark brown Aluk flush casement frames, chosen for their slim profile and elegant finish. The chimney stacks were to be painted in a light tone to match the render planned for the ground floor, helping to unify the upper and lower sections of the façade.

Updating the Final Scheme

After reviewing the options, the client asked us to update the final design to reflect their vision in full detail. The home would now feature Kassandra Multi brick across the main structure, chosen for its character and compatibility with neighbouring village homes.

On the upper half, we explored either Cedral cladding in Vanilla White or a tile-hung finish using traditional clay tiles to add depth and texture. The roof was to be finished in matching clay tiles, reinforcing the home’s timeless appeal. For the windows, the client selected very dark brown aluminium flush casement frames with glazing bars, preferring the slim profile and classic look.

A soft render was proposed for the back of the house to cover the existing brickwork and create a lighter, more cohesive appearance across the rear elevation. This choice helped modernise the space while still respecting the home’s traditional character.

This project is a great example of how the 3D exterior design process works. From initial concepts to final tweaks, we used visualisation as a tool to reduce uncertainty and guide every decision.

Why Exterior Visualisation Makes a Difference

Without visualisation, the client would have had to sign off on major design decisions without knowing how they would actually look together. With our support, she saw everything before construction avoiding costly backtracking, and feeling confident about moving forward.

This project highlights the value of our 3D exterior design service, especially when:

  • You’re working with limited 2D architectural visuals
  • You want to mix traditional and modern styles
  • You need to test materials, colours and product finishes before buying
  • You want a clear visual to share with your builder or planning authority
