Classical French-Inspired Home Transformation, Oxfordshire

A Classical French-Inspired Exterior Transformation in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

This exterior transformation in Oxfordshire began with a property that had strong bones but a façade that no longer reflected the ambitions of its owners. The brief was to reimagine the exterior entirely, drawing on the elegance of French manor architecture while ensuring the result felt coherent, considered and appropriate to its rural setting. Several design directions were explored and presented as photorealistic 3D visualisations before a single material was selected, giving the clients full clarity on how each approach would read in context.

The Design Direction

The chosen direction centred on a smooth white render finish paired with an anthracite standing seam zinc roof, a combination that delivers immediate architectural authority without relying on excessive ornamentation. Arched dormer windows with white moulded surrounds were introduced to punctuate the roofline, creating rhythm and vertical interest across what is a predominantly horizontal elevation. Each dormer was sized and positioned to maintain proportion across the full width of the property.

Materials and Detailing

At ground level, full-height French doors and multi-pane casement windows in charcoal frames were specified throughout, unifying the fenestration across all elevations and allowing generous natural light into the interior. Brass door furniture provides the only warm metallic accent, a deliberate restraint that keeps the palette tight. Doric columns frame the entrance, adding formality to the arrival sequence without heaviness.

The attached garage was redesigned as a fully integrated element, sharing the render finish, roofline pitch and window detailing of the main house rather than being treated as a secondary structure. Landscaping was kept intentionally restrained: a clipped formal hedge runs the length of the front elevation with rounded topiary at key intervals, ensuring the architecture remains the focal point. The rear elevation, facing the garden, receives the same level of design attention as the street frontage, with French doors, consistent framing and a clean material palette carried throughout.
