Bold Victorian Living Room Makeover in South West London

Every now and then, a project feels extra special, and this Victorian living room design in Battersea was one of them. The client came to us through a lovely referral from a previous homeowner who had really enjoyed the process, which always feels like a little pat on the back for us. From the moment we saw their elegant sitting room, we knew it was going to be something beautiful.

Unlike many of our projects that start with a defined brief or Pinterest inspiration, this client was in the middle of a renovation and wasn’t entirely sure what their style was. What they did know was that they wanted something colourful, bold, and full of personality, without losing the period charm of their late 1870s home.

The ornate plasterwork, high ceilings, and picture rails told a story of craftsmanship, and we wanted to make sure our design celebrated that history while giving the room a fresh, modern energy. Our goal was to create a traditional living room design that felt curated, vibrant, and timeless: a space that blended heritage with heart.

The Design Brief

The brief captured the essence of a homeowner ready to experiment with style but keen to keep the design timeless. The client wanted a bright and colourful living room design with dark green as a possible base, complemented by a gentle touch of pale pink.
They described their style as a mix of old and new, with an emphasis on curation rather than clutter. Their furniture and accessory budget of up to £10,000 gave us the scope to create something both striking and sophisticated.

The Design Process, Furniture Layout Arrangement

Floor plan showing traditional Victorian living room layout options with corner sofa, armchairs, and fireplace placement for balanced proportions.

As with every House Designer project, we began by getting to know the client’s vision and the character of the property. Working remotely, our team developed a detailed moodboard to explore colours, fabrics, textures, and finishes. This helped the client see how dark green, soft pink, and brass could sit comfortably within a Victorian envelope.

We then created a series of layout options to make the most of the room’s natural symmetry. One option placed the focus on the fireplace. Another emphasised cosy conversation. A third offered a relaxed, slightly looser arrangement that still respected the proportions of the space.

We created a series of detailed 3D visuals to help our client feel confident with her design choices. She was unsure about using a bold wallpaper in the living room, so we produced several renderings to show exactly how the space would look with different options. Seeing each version in context helped her compare colours and patterns in a realistic way, which made the decision process much easier. Once she felt happy with the final wallpaper choice, we developed the full layout plan, including furniture placement, lighting, and styling elements, to bring the vision together with complete clarity.

Bringing the Design to Life

After reviewing these options with the client, we agreed on a design that felt both classic and vibrant. The furniture placement, lighting, and decorative accents were refined to create balance from every angle. Our 3D visuals helped the client feel confident about the final direction before we began sourcing items.

Once the final layout and concept were approved, our sourcing team stepped in. We selected key furniture pieces, lighting, and accessories with careful attention to comfort and longevity. Using our trade accounts, we were able to secure generous savings from trusted suppliers such as Loaf, John Lewis, and Soho Lighting. These discounts allowed the client to maximise their budget while still choosing high quality pieces that elevated the overall scheme. The final savings exceeded £1,000 without compromising on style.

Colour and Style Direction

To celebrate the period features, we leaned into a traditional living room design with a modern touch. The ornate plasterwork above the picture rail remained white, creating a crisp contrast against deeper wall tones below. A rich dark green was chosen for the new sofas, while soft blush pink accents were introduced through cushions and artwork.

The overall palette felt luxurious yet inviting, balancing the confidence of bold colour with timeless design. Brass details, layered lighting, and soft fabrics created warmth and depth, giving the room personality without overwhelming the heritage features.

Finishing Touches

The final layout made the most of the room’s proportions, creating a space that feels elegant and functional. The old parquet flooring was replaced with a soft neutral carpet to enhance comfort and continuity. Textures were layered through upholstery, accessories, and artwork to create a cohesive flow, while brass and glass elements brought a gentle evening glow.

Every detail, from the symmetry of the furniture arrangement to the placement of decorative accents, was carefully considered to bring harmony and balance.
